Drug and Alcohol Services

The service assists a range of clientele experiencing substance use such as:

  • Overuse of Alcohol
  • Opiate Use
  • Excessive analgesic use
  • Benzodiazepine and other prescribed medications
  • Cannabis Dependence
  • Psychostimulant Use

The aim of the program is to enable individuals to reduce the personal and social harms associated with substance abuse.

Our approach, based on a relapse prevention model, enables participants to gain a better understanding of the links between specific lifestyles and substance abuse. Drug and alcohol issues are dealt with from this perspective, rather than as stand-alone problems.

The program operates within a group setting, although individual sessions are organised to ensure personal goals are being met, and includes:

  • Drug and alcohol education that covers information on specific substance abuse and the effects on body and mind.
  • Exploration of personal coping strategies and the impact of substance abuse on these. Capacities such as self-awareness and confidence are examined and enhanced.
  • Encouragement for participants to explore issues related to self esteem and support in developing methods of identifying and increasing personal strengths.
  • Education on lifestyle management including, health and nutrition, exercise, recreation and relaxation techniques as well providing information about accessing employment, accommodation and community support.
  • Education on stress and anger management is provided and individuals are assisted with understanding and appropriately expressing a range of emotions including loneliness, frustration, anxiety and anger.
  • Assistance with the development of better communication skills and more effective ways of articulating feelings and needs.
  • Development of better problem solving skills enabling participants to exercise personal choice and gain some control over the problems in their lives.
  • Relapse prevention that covers typical triggers that may generate possible relapses and assists patients in avoiding high risk situations.
  • Activity based program that involves yoga, boot camp and gym/swim.

The activity based program includes fitness development and lifestyle skills acquisition. The newest component in line with some other AOD facilities and Beyond Blue is boot camp which runs 4 days in the week and aims at improving mood, reducing cravings, increasing self-efficacy and  assisting in developing time structuring and motivational skills. These are just some of the benefits.

Drug & Alcohol Day Program

Delmont provides detoxification treatment which ensures a safe and comfortable completion of withdrawal. Management of withdrawal involves a high level of both medical and nursing care as well as pharmacotherapy. The period of withdrawal may take 7-10 days and is an introduction to the process of achieving long term control over drug and alcohol use.

Patients are discharged from the inpatient program into an established Drug & Alcohol Outpatient program which aims to:

  • Provide a structured environment enabling participants to focus on recovery.
  • Provide necessary support and education to minimise harm caused by excessive use of drugs and alcohol.
  • Provide a supportive and challenging environment that encourages the development of skills to promote an elevated level of functioning.
  • Provide a robust exercise & lifestyle program that aims to improve fitness and promote structure, self-discipline and self efficacy.
